  1. Title: Raise the Driving Age (2007)
Topic: Whether or not the driving age should be changed.
Specific Purpose: To create a persuasive argument and to defend the idea of changing the legal driving age to 19.
Thesis Statement: “Move the time to 19 when other perks and responsibilities of adults are granted.”

    I. Introduction
 The author is saying that insurance companies are slightly at fault for reckless teenage driving and the results of that.
 “Allstate has a point – a very good point.” transition sentence to the next body paragraph.
    II. Body

    a) “The police are driven to distraction by this epidemic and spend far too much of their time on it.”
    - A 16 yr old can’t see a NC-17 movie not drink alcohol or vote but is allowed to drive a 5,000 pound car at 60 kmh
    - A 17 yr old girl died from her own reckless driving.
    b) “I’m not one of those who looks back to my teenage years as unblemished by any stupid behavior. Far from it. I got my license when I was 16 and was technically a good driver…”
    - He believes because he was such a poor example of a teenage driver that all kids were like him. And teenagers don’t deserve to be on the road.
    - Nor he or his friends should’ve had their drivers’ license.
    c) “Is a driver’s licensing a right or a privilege?”
    - Big enough to drive? Mature enough to drive?
    - Unfair to take away the right. But no one said life was fair.

    III. Conclusion
 Restating the thesis ideas and summarizing his opinion that everyone should wait to adulthood in order to drive.

  2. Title: Raise the Driving age
 Topic: Debate on whether the driving age should be changed from 16 to 19.
 Purpose: Persuade readers to agree that the driving age should be changed to 19.
 Thesis: The evidence of teenage recklessness almost seems a daily headline.

    i. Intro
    o Anecdote about insurance companies
    o Quote “a 16-year-old can’t see an NC-17 rated movie, drink alcohol, or vote—but drive a 5000 pound car at 60mph? That’s OK.”
o Thesis: The evidence of teenage recklessness almost seems a daily headline.

    ii. Body
    A. There are legal and personal impacts of reckless teenage driving.
    • Every hit and run takes time from other police matters
    • Courts think disproportionate amount of time is spent on cases that wouldn’t happen if the driving age was 19
    • Effects family, friend, communities in many harsh ways
    • Connects next paragraph with personal experience
    B. Teenagers have no fear when driving, especially to drink and drive.
    • No judgment, little fear
    • Girls used to be better drivers, not anymore
    • Drinking and driving “I was so shitfaced Saturday night I drove home with one eye on the center line and the other one closed.”
    • Connects with an a point that makes us wonder
    C. Driving is a privilege not a right; therefore, it is expectable to change the driving so it increases the safety of others.
    • Courts have long considered driving a privilege not a right
    • It can’t always be fair to everyone
    • “we know that many young drivers are good and we also know that many other drivers are terrible but the issue is public safety and a hugely disproportionate number of injuries and deaths on the road are caused by drivers under 19” (connecting point)
iii. The driving age should be raised to 19, so it can become one of the other perks and responsibilities granted to adults.

  3. Title: Raise the Driving Age

Topic: The topic is the driving age.

Specific Purpose: Inform others and state his opinion on the driving age.

Thesis: I have little regard for young drivers. They should have to wait until they are 19, when there are granted other adult perks and responsibilities.

Introduction: “A 16-year-old can’t see an NC-17 rated movie, drink alcohol or vote- but they can drive a 5000 pound car at 60mph? That’s OK.”

    Body:
    Major Point A:
All-State makes a good point. The evidence of teenage driving almost seems to be a daily headline.
Example: The author lost his daughter to her own reckless driving.

    Major Point B:
When teenagers get their licenses at age 16, most have little fear and almost no judgment.
Example: The author talks about when he first got his license. He participated in drag races and was involved in several car accidents where, fortunately, no one was injured.

    Major Point C:
Is a drivers license a right or a privilege?
Example: Author asks when teenagers should have a chance to get their license. Society has decided that 16 is the age when people are “mature” enough to handle a license.

Conclusion: Move the time to 19 when other adult perks and responsibilities are granted. Let everyone wait until adulthood.

  4. Title: “A Call to Arms on Anti-Semitism”
    Topic: Anti-Semitism
Specific Purpose: Become aware of and fight Anti-Semitism in Canada.
Thesis Statement: “We believe Canada can be a leader in the fight against it.”
Introduction: “The Jewish High Holidays are wrapping up. Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting and atonement, is upon us. Before you know it, it will be Christmas. Is this the preamble to some bad interfaith joke?”
    Body
Major point 1: -Worldwide it can be acknowledged that this form of hatred is once again on the rise.
    Specific Supporting Examples:
    -Fear of Muslims
    -Persecution of Christians
-Racism against Jews has proven sustainable and promiscuous
Major point 2:- In the past few years the number of attacks on Jews has increased.
    Specific Supporting Examples:
-incidents include vandalism, graffiti and the desecration of tombstones.
-An elementary school was firebombed and the library destroyed
Major Point 3:- A stand-alone resolution may be put before the United Nations General Assembly
    Specific Supporting Examples:
-A stand-alone resolution may be put before the United Nations General Assembly
-All that is needed is a sponsor
    -Hopefully Canada will sponsor
-This would testify to Canada’s diversity
Conclusion: “As people who know what it means to take a leap of faith, we share that hope. As Canadians, we encourage our country to lead the way.”

  5. Title: Raise the Drinking Age
    Rafe Mair (2007)
    • Topic
o Raising the driving age to 19 from 16.
    • Specific Purpose
o To raise awareness of the issue that driving is a privilege that should be extended only at the age of 19.

    Introduction
    • “A 16 year-old can’t see a NC-17 rated movie, drink alcohol or vote –but drive a 5,000 pound car at 60mph? That’s OK.”

    Body
    Major Point 1
    • Cost of teenage driving
    o Lives lost
    o Police time
    o Courts time
o What lives lost does to family, friends and communities
    • Transition using personal loss of 17 year daughter to his behavior as a young driver
    Major Point 2
    • Examples of reckless teenage driving
o Had little fear and almost no judgment
o Involved in several accidents where no was hurt
o Drag racing and playing tag with other cars
    o Drunk driving
    • Transition using personal experience as youth driver to question of right or privilege
    Major Point 3
    • Driving a right or a privilege?
o Courts hold that it is a privilege
o Being big enough to drive does not mean you are a good driver
o There will always be exceptions but law can’t be based on exceptions
o Other perks and responsibilities are granted at 19
    Conclusion
    • Let everyone else wait until adulthood to exercise a very important privilege—driving a car and doing so carefully.

  7. Title: Raise the Driving Age

Topic: To raise the legal driving age from 16 to 19 years of age

Specific purpose: To persuade and educate the audience that the result of many accidents, deaths and injuries is due to the recklessness of most young drivers. Therefore the legal driving age should be changed to 19 years of age.

Thesis statement: Driving is a privilege that should only be granted once one has reached adulthood.

Introduction: Author uses anecdote on insurance companies. " A 16 year old can't see a NC-17 rated movie, drink alcohol or vote- but drive a 5,000 pound car at 60 MPH? That's OK.

Transition: ""All state has a point a very good point"

A: The repercussions of young reckless drivers
    - Police are spending too much time on these incidents and could be better spent on other matters.
-Court also spends time on these incidents
    - Personal damage is caused

    -Drinking and driving
Transition: Author uses personal examples that lead to driving being a privilege rather than a right.

C; Driving is a privilege not a right.
    - Courts have long held that it is a privilege
    - A persons size does not have a factor on whether they are ready to drive or not
    -Life is unfair

Conclusion: Move the time to 19 when other perks and responsibilities of adults are granted.

  9. Title: “A Call to Arms on Anti-Semitism”

    Topic: Anti-Semitism

    Specific Purpose: Raise awareness

Thesis Statement: Canada now has the opportunity to do more to combat anti-Semitism; our country can be a leader in the fight against it.

    Introduction:
Worldwide, it is generally acknowledged that this ancient hatred is, once again, on the rise. To be sure, other forms of prejudice are also raging, including fear of Muslims and persecution of Christians.

    Body

Major point 1: The past few years have witnessed an increase in attacks on Jews, their synagogues, homes, cemeteries and other sites of gathering.

    Specific Supporting Examples:
a.) Incidents in Canada include vandalism, graffiti, and other desecration of gravestones.
b.) Last spring, a Jewish elementary school in Montreal was firebombed, its library destroyed.
c.) Clerics, politicians, media and ordinary citizens eloquently denounced this act.

Major point 2: Prime Minister Paul Martin repudiated both the attack and its perpetrators, vowing that they have no place in our proudly pluralistic society.

    Specific Supporting Examples:
a.) He also declared our country can and should do more to combat anti-Semitism.
b.) Canada now has that opportunity.
c.) A stand-alone resolution may be put before the United Nations General Assembly.
d.) First it needs one or more sponsors – countries who speak to it at the community level.
e.) After the committee stage, the resolution comes before a full meeting of the general assembly.
f.) We feel that this resolution is both urgent and important.

Major Point 3: To help ensure that a strong international condemnation of anit-Semitism has a fighting chance – something that for decades after the Holocaust would have passed easily, but now may be more problematic – we are urging Canada to sponsor the resolution.

    Specific Supporting Examples:
a.) Such a move would testify to Canada’s celebrated diversity, our embrace of universal human rights and our determination to combat racism of all kinds.
b.) At an April, 2004 Berlin meeting of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the 55 member states, Canada among them, endorsed a strong statement against anti-Semitism. “Berlin Declaration”
c.) It proclaimed that political issues never justify anti-Semitism.

Conclusion: “In fighting anti-Semitism we fight for all humanity.” There is a chance that the world will step up and acknowledge that virulent anti-Semitism hurts us all, and do what it can to put a stop to it.

  13. Title: Adopting the Principles of the Berlin Declaration
Topic: Anti –Semitism is an issue affecting people of all faiths, nationalities and political beliefs. It is a global fight against prejudice actions or beliefs.
Specific purpose: To inform, and convince humanity to help stop anti-Semitism.
Thesis statement: Anti-Semitism is a current, continual issue of prejudiced and racist beliefs toward Jewish people.

Throughout the history of the Jewish community, they have constantly been threatened callously as a race by countless groups or individuals, even in this current day. The first example of this was the cruel and popular:

    1. Holocaust. Hitler and the Nazi’s had attempted to abolish the Jewish race. In their attempts they almost succeeded with the murdering of six million Jews. This was the worst event of anti-Semitism but the trend still has appeared to continue:

    2. In Montreal, Canada, last spring, a Jewish elementary school was firebombed. Also, acts of graffiti or public displays of racist remarks can still be found anywhere. These current day examples give proof that anti-Semitism still exists.

    3. There is a strong, growing opposition to anti-Semitism but more support is necessary to eliminate the problem. If you are unfamiliar with the Berlin Declaration, it was a unanimously endorsed statement against anti-Semitism. Canada, amongst 55 member states of the 0.S.C.E. (the Organization for Security and C0-operation in Europe) declared the current issues of anti-Semitism at the Berlin meeting, April, 2004. The U.N Secretary General Kofi Annan hopes that the U.N. will accept the policies of anti-Semitism but the vote is theoretically in humanity’s hands.

Even though the large majority understands the havoc and threats that Jewish people have experience and offer sympathy, a small minority still does not understand. It is every persons responsibility to help in the fight against anti-Semitism.

  14. Title: A Call to Arms on Anti-Semitism
    Topic: Anti-Semitism
Specific purpose: to educate to people that anti-Semitism is still happening today and is once again on the rise.
Thesis Statement: Canada has proven itself capable of leading the fight against anti-Semitism by, being a separate entity from Israel, declaring publicly its opposition to all forms of racism and by having already signed the “Berlin Declaration”.

    Introduction
-Examples of Jewish holidays and Christian holidays
-Examples of how the hatred of other forms of religions (Muslim and Christian) have been condemned but racism against Jews is still sustainable and promiscuous (graffiti, desecration of gravestones, school bombs etc.)
-The need of a leader in bringing forth a resolution towards the UN condemning anti-Semitism
    -Thesis statement

    Body
Canada has the opportunity to be a leader in the fight against anti-Semitism because it’s a completely separate country from Israel.
-Canada has the ability to speak to the General Assembly of the UN at a committee level
-As a country that does not lie in the Middle East, it doesn’t run the risk of rejection from other countries that would usually automatically vote against it.
-As a country, Canada has a better chance of generating support because of its multilateral approach to contentious issues.

Canada’s strict opposition to all forms of racism is another reason that it could be considered a strong leader in the fight against anti-Semitism.
    -Canada celebrates diversity
    -Canada embraces universal human rights
-Canada has a respect for international communities

Being a country that has already endorsed a strong statement (Berlin Declaration) against anti-Semitism, Canada once again shows its commitment to the cause.
-Reaffirms the guarantees promoted in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights( freedom from discrimination based on religion or race)
-Shows that Canada is intolerant to political issues that try to justify anti-Semitism. Eg: Israel and elsewhere in the Middle east
-Canada is a country that embodies what Secretary-General Kofi Annan says “We hope that people of all faiths, nationalities and political beliefs will stand up proudly and agree”.

    Conclusion
-Reasons to why the UN should adopt the Berlin declaration
-A plea for the world to step up and stop anti-Semitism
-A plea for Canadians to lead the way

  16. A Call to Arms in Anti-Semitism

Topic: Support against Anti-Semitism in Canada

Specific Purpose: To educated Canada about Anti-Semitism and gain their support and awareness

Thesis Statement: Anti-Semitism acts will continue to violate Jewish beliefs, values and culture unless awareness and support nationally and internationally is established.

    Introduction
Although all religions are different we all have a common belief, a belief to treat others as we would like to be treated. Coming together as a Christian, a Muslim, and a Jew, we believe that Canada can be the leader in the fight against all forms of Anti-Semitism. A centuries-old racism directed against Jews has time and time again had proved to be maintainable and licentious.

    Body

    Major Point 1:

This specific racism to one people can be recognized internationally as a once again growing threat.

    Supporting Examples

    - Fear of Muslims and discrimination of Christians

    - The war on terror in Iraq
    - Racism against Jews has proven itself to be maintainable and promiscuous

    Major point 2:

The number of racial attacks on Jews have increased in that last few years

    Supporting Examples

    - The desecration of tombstones through vandalism and graffiti

    - In Montreal an elementary school was firebombed, destroying its library

    Major Point 3

National actions and support are needed in order to for awareness of Anti-Semitism has a fighting chance

    Supporting Examples

    - In Berlin in April, 2004 at a meeting of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the 55 member states, with Canada among them, endorsed a strong statement against anti-Semitism through the creation of the “Berlin Declaration”
    - Anti-Semitism is never justified in political issues

    Conclusion

“As people who know what it is like to take a leap of faith, we share that hope. As Canadian, we encourage our country to lead the way.”

  17. Title: A Call to Arms

Topic: The need for Canada to take a strong stand against anti-Semitism

Purpose: To educate and advocate on the importance of a stance against ant-Semitism and Canada’s role in leading the stance.

Thesis: Canada needs to lead the way in an international stance against all forms of anti-Semitism across the world.

Introduction: As an interfaith and multi-cultural nation, Canada has the opportunity and needs to lead the fight against the recent resurfacing of anti-Semitism.

    Body:

Major Point One: Incidents of anti-Semitism have recently increased and are present in Canada
Example: Graffiti, vandalism, desecration of gravesites and even bombing of a Jewish elementary school in Montreal. These are acts that the Prime Minister has denounced

Major Point Two: Paul Martin (Prime Minister) declared that Canada should do more to combat anti-Semitism and now we have the opportunity. For the first time, a standalone resolution condemning anti-Semitism can be put before the U.N. For this to happen, the resolution needs at least one sponsor and Canada would be a prime candidate because of our reputation. Example: Canada’s diversity, embracing of human rights and determination to combat all forms of racism.

Major Point 3: Canada has already endorsed a strong statement against anti-Semitism at the OSCE meeting in April, 2004. This became known as the Berlin Declaration. The Berlin Declaration has since gone on to condemn all forms of anti-Semitism as it reaffirms all the guarantees given in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It also proclaimed that political issues such as those in the Middle East never justify anti-Semitism. Example:U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan quote “When we seek justice for the Palestinians – as we must- let is firmly disavow anyone who tries to use that cause to incite hatred against Jews in Israel or elsewhere.”

Conclusion: “As people who know what it means to take a leap of faith, we share that hope. As Canadians, we encourage our country to lead the way.”

  18. Title: Raise the Driving Age (2007) pg.422

    Topic: The legal driving age.
Specific Purpose: To inform and persuade the reader to support the issue that driving is a privilege that should not be granted until the age of 19.

Thesis Statement: The legal driving age should be “move[d]…to 19 when other perks and responsibilities of adults are granted.”

    I. Introduction

The author informs his history working for an insurance company, and how he believes that insurance companies are somewhat responsible for reckless teenage driving and the repercussions that come from it.

‘Allstate has a point-a very good point. “A 16-year-old can’t see an NC-17 rated movie, drink alcohol or vote-but drive a 5,000 pound car at 60mph? That’s OK.”’

-Teenage reckless driving almost seems to be a daily headline.

    -Young kids racing.

-Seniors killed by young hit and run driver.

    II. Body

    A) “I had no business having a driver’s license nor did 75 per cent of my friends.”

    -Kids drinking and driving.

    -Playing “tag” (reckless driving games)

    -Involved in accidents.

    B) “As a father who lost a 17-year-old daughter due to reckless driving (her own), I know about the pain and what it so tragically does to the security of the family affected.”

-He knows what victims’ families go through and those involved.

-The stats of reckless driving have increased since he was a young reckless driver.

    C) "It seems to me we must ask ourselves a question. Is a drivers license a right or a privilege?"
-Courts believe it is a privilege.

-The accidents cause by young drivers waste the time of the courts and the police.

    - It would be unfair to take the right away from those who are responsible. No one said life was fair.

III. Conclusion. – Restates the thesis ideas and summarizes his opinion that driving is a privilege that can wait until adulthood.

"We know that many young drivers are good and we also know that many older drivers are terrible but the issue is public safety and a hugely disproportionate number of injuries and deaths on the road are caused by drivers under 19.”

  19. Raise the Driving age.
    Title- driving is a privelege
Topic-should the driving age be raised to 19?
Specific purpose- To persuade people on raising the drinking age.
Thesis Statement- Most 16 year olds are not old enough or mature enough to handle the responsibility of driving cars.

1.Introduction- " As a father who lost a 17-year old daughter due to reckless driving (her own) , I know about pain and what it so tragically does to the secruity of the family"

Do teenagers not understand that there are people in this world that love them and don't want to see them get hurt. THey aren't old enough to understand that the world isn't just about them and that there are people in it that are affected by their actions.

    2. Body- A. "A 16-year-old can't see an NC-17 rated movie, drink alcohol or vote-but drive a 5000 pound car at 60 mph? Thats okay"

Obviously society thinks that teenagers aren't mature enough for these kind of activities. So why does society think that they are mature enough to drive a 5000 pound car. The reason why people don't think they are mature enough is because they will see a NC-17 rated movie and think its cool. Or drink alcohol and cause an accident.

    B. "The police are driven to distraction by this epidemic and spend far to much time on it. For example-every time therese a hit and run accident..etc Page423"

Most teenagers are so irresponsible that they drive reckless and when they cause an accident they aren't even mature enough to stick around for the police. If they aren't old enough to deal with situation like this they aren't old enough to drive a car.

    C. "It seems to me that we must ask ourselves a question. Is a drivers license a right or a privilege?"

Most teenagers think that having a drivers license is a right, when its actually a privilege. They don't understand that society has given them the right to drive a car.

Conclusion- Teenagers need to start realizing that driving is a dangerous thing to do, and that if not done properly people are going to get hurt along with themselves.

  20. “Raise the Driving Age”
    Tracy Tremblay
Who should decide when it is the right age to drive? There are many examples to support the argument of raising the age. Safety of the driver and of others is a major factor.
The issue of public safety is supported by the fact that a large disproportionate number of injuries and deaths on the road are caused by drivers under the age of 19. Some of the reasons, I suspect, are that one, they are of drinking age and two, they are at a stage in life where social interactions are very important. Being accountable and responsible has not become part of their value system yet and of course, peer pressure at this age is huge.
Most teenagers have had a job or are working by the age of 19. Their sense of responsibility has begun but has not fully developed yet. The excitement of owning or driving a vehicle puts them on a higher level with their peers. They become more popular and with that new popularity comes the pressure to maintain a certain image. The author tells us stories of playing “tag” and racing up and down busy streets clearly putting the safety of the driver and public at risk. “No Fear” is what the author calls it. No fear may be what the author felt but how did the passengers and pedestrians feel?
The author has felt the pain of losing a loved one to reckless driving. The questions one asks in the face of tragedy may be “how could I have prevented this from happening?”, “What measures could I have done to educate my daughter/son to become a defensive driver?”
We feel some how directly responsible for our loved ones accidents even if had not been there. So what are we going to do about it and who should decide when it is the right age to drive? I think as a community we should strongly consider raising the driving age to 19. We as a community, as a parent, as a friend, brother, sister have the responsibility to protect our love ones and the loved ones of others.
